    Bowling Alone

    by Robert D. Putnam

    Simon & Schuster Press.

This penetrating look at the decline of American social engagement by a Harvard Professor is absolutely stunning. Putnam traces the decline of all religious, political, social, and moral organizations in the last third of our century.

He convincingly argues that our culture is now grievously lacking in social capital (the transaction of life between people in various forms of friendship) which leads to escalating epidemics of depression, loneliness, and ensuing despair. For example, in the past 25 years family dinners together have declined 33%, and having friends over has declined 45% in our nation.

Fortunately, he also explores in great detail some social reasons for this decline, as well as practical means of reversing the alarming trends that are critical to our understanding of the role of the local church in our age.
