“Image is everything”—or so pitched American tennis legend Andre Agassi for Canon photography. Though the idea of “Image” obviously serves as a metaphor for the pictures that the Canon Rebel could produce, the marketing is equally obvious: from athletics to academics to politics, Image has not merely exceeded Content—at this point Image threatens to replace Content in a world without truth. This theme—of which steroid use and abuse in merely a symptom of the broader Image/Content dispute—forms the compelling foundation for Chris Bell’s new documentary regarding steroid abuse in the U.S.
What keeps our attention in the Bourne films, along with the outrageously slick fight scenes and Bourne's uncanny ability to stay one-step-ahead of his pursuers, is that he's actually on a very human mission - a journey, if you will, to find out who he really is. I’m sure not many people actually see themselves as hypocritical Pharisees, and for many years I was no different. In many respects the Christian religion has plenty of opportunity for legalism and moralism to flourish, in effect, missing the Gospel partially or entirely. In my case, my Christian religiosity was a perfect cover for hiding the outworking of a particular sinful bent that was ruling my life and still fights in my heart to be the master of my life.
