Goofy Wisdom: Those who dig a hole get dirty.
Godly Wisdom: Dig that hole for God’s Glory.
Wife: Cathy. She walked by at a Calvary Chapel BBQ, I thought she was pretty cute, she didn’t notice me, so I said, “Hey, My name is Tom.” I stuck my hand out and invited her to sit down. Shackled by my confidence (she might say arrogance) she fell deeply in love with me and pledged to have my children.
To Wit: We have one child Anastasia Lee born in June of 2006.
Various other Sentient Beings in the Household: One Dog, Nikita, one dog Bailey, one cat Takoda, one bird Tostabon, one bird Jasper and one unnamed fish.
Education: B.S. at University California, San Diego in Biochemistry / Cell Biology, minored in Philosophy and Psychology.
How I got involved with Kaleo: Drew heard about this maverick teacher, teaching a college aged group at another church. This maverick teacher was me. This is how we met. Drew invited me to lunch with him and David Fairchild which is how I met David. This was intimidating and I vowed never to be in their presence again because I felt so puny. But the Lord had other plans as a few years later we were called out of our former church and join a megachurch called Kaleo. That church Loves God and Loves His Gospel and has a Missional commitment to the city of San Diego and that church was where my wife and I said, “This is it, we’re home.”
Things I think about: I think about the Gospel and how to adapt that Gospel to the culture God has placed us in. I think about genes and how our sin affects genes and in turn how genes contribute to our sin. I think about how the church should be a counter cultural institution challenging perceived norms and opinions with this Gospel of Grace He has revealed to us; demonstrating that our sin has been nailed to His Cross. I think about theology and doctrine and how sometimes we spend too much time on theology and doctrine and not enough time on proclaiming that theology and doctrine because we are too fearful. I think about how God can use me to teach others to overcome that fear with His Gospel. And I pray that I am useful to His end.
A Story: A man and a woman board a plane together and are seated next to each other on a flight out of town. The man and the woman engage in pleasant conversation explaining to one another that each of them get nervous when the plane initially takes off; but at the same time there is a bit of excitement in that initial thrust of momentum that is required for lift-off amid the expectation of encountering a new or semi-familiar land. The conversation and the flight continue in such a manner until at some determined point the man asks the woman, “Would you sleep with me for 5 million dollars?” The woman, somewhat startled at the audaciousness of the question but intrigued with the idea of what she could do with 5 million dollars, was startled at her answer as she stared back and said, “Sure.” To which point the man without missing his cue replied, “Would you sleep with me for 10 dollars?” At which point the woman shocked at the question retorted, “What kind of a woman do you think I am!?!?” The man calmly answered, “We’ve already established that, now we are just negotiating the price.”
May we never negotiate this Gospel revealed to us for the price of more money, members or prestige.
