Who

What does Kaleo mean? Kaleo is the Greek source word, which Bible translators render as "called".

Kaleo is a community that are called to be in fellowship with one another as we serve, worship and glorify God. We are called to be transformed and renewed. We are called to engage our culture with the gospel. We are called, not by our own choosing but by God's call alone.

Kaleo as the Church

Today, the English word "church" is often used to describe a building used as a Christian house of worship. In the Greek Old Testament (the Septuagint translation) and later in the New Testament, the Greek word "ekklesia" that we translate "church" originally referred to people - God's people gathered to worship their God. But the significance of the word "ekklesia" actually goes beyond this difference in a profound and meaningful way.

To the Greeks, "ekklesia" described a public meeting that only certain members of the community attended. Such a meeting was often called to transact the business of the community. Although this word was sometimes used to describe meetings of the Jews in the Septuagint, the word that came to be used of Jewish houses of worship was "synagogue" (Greek: sunagoga), which means "a gathering" or "an assembling together." While this word was also used to describe Christian gatherings and houses of worship, Christians chose the word "ekklesia" derived from "ekkaleo"; "ek" out of "kaleo" to call. Christians are the "called out ones."

Kaleo as a Community

Kaleo is a community of individuals with diverse backgrounds, personalities, philosophies, ideas and visions; united by a relationship with Christ.

Kaleo is not 'church' the way our society defines it. Kaleo is a family. A family with members of all ages. A family with members who are students and software designers and retail clerks and parents and construction workers. A family with members who surf and who do scrap booking and who play in rock bands and who read mystery novels. A family with members who have an intimate relationship with God, others who desire to know Him better and still others who don't know Him well at all. A family with members who gather on Sunday's to worship God, to pray, to learn, and for some, to just hang out.

Kaleo is, essentially, a family created by God for His glory. We hope this section provides a glimpse into who we are.
