It is a reminder of when Ezekiel worked to describe the same image (Ezekiel 1:26-28). We must know that Jesus Christ is no longer a humble, homeless peasant but sits on the most indescribable throne, clothed in the most indescribable glory of all time. Jesus Christ is this amazing. Jesus Christ is so glorious that John uses jewels and a rainbow to describe the appearance around him. Nobody else is described like this. When we talk of our friends or meet someone at a party and people try to figure out if they know this person, no one says, oh, the dude that is like jasper. Or, He had the appearance of the glory of a rainbow filling the sky around him. Yeah, I know that guy. Nice guy but don t forget your sunglasses if you are chilling with him. No, with us it is more like, You know Bob, chubby, brown hair. But with Jesus there is a floundering for images, jewels and mysteries to try and describe his glory! This is Christ. This is like the best episode of MTV cribs ever made. Nobody has a throne like this. You think xhibit has good surround sound in his living room? Jesus Christ has thunder! And check out the pool in this crib. It is like a sea of glass and is clear as crystal. This is a healthy-sized pool. Kanye West, Tony Hawk, eat your heart out. This is a sick crib. But the most phenomenal part of the throne is the one who sits on it. If we meditate on Jesus Christ and his throne, we can start to see how ridiculous our thrones are. All of us build our own thrones. We build thrones at work, at home or make our cars into a throne, and we compare our thrones to others. We compare our house and yard to our neighbors and either feel pride or despair. We are always trying to keep up with the Joneses. This is a silly game because everything on our throne will be rubbish. All of your toys, clothes, cars, video games, and movies will be destroyed. Nothing we have will last. So we work on building these magnificent thrones, so we can sit on them and be worshipped when our thrones are an absolute joke compared to the throne of Jesus Christ. No matter what you build and accomplish, it will all be rubble one day and even while it shines, it is nothing compared to the throne of Jesus Christ. There will be no supernatural rainbow and pool like the sea in your throne. Compare your throne to Christ, and you will stop living to build your own throne and will start living to humbly worship the one on the throne. Revelation 4:6b-10: The holiness of God Holy means set apart, other. Jesus Christ is the three times holy. This is holy underlined, in bold and with an exclamation point. Jesus Christ has an entourage of powerful creatures that worship him. This is not a normal scene. This is a scene that shows mighty, powerful and almost unimaginable creatures surrounding Jesus Christ on the throne. These creatures sing to him who is holy and eternal. They realize the holiness of God and they set aside their crowns to worship him on the throne. They realize the absolute holiness of God and they eagerly cast their crowns to him. They eagerly fall off their throne to worship the one who is on the eternal throne. God s creation, including the mighty beasts and the elders surrounding him, realize he is the holy one. They look to Christ and compare themselves to Jesus Christ and it leads them to humble adoration and worship of Jesus Christ. The beasts and the elders are not looking around comparing themselves to the other beasts and the other elders but they look to Jesus Christ and realize he is holy, holy, holy. They look to Jesus Christ and realize he is the one who deserves all of our affection and worship. This should be an easy comparison for us to make. As far as I know, nobody in this room has six-winged creatures with faces like a lion, ox, eagle or man flying around covering there faces worshipping them. As far as I know nobody here has thunder and lightning storms going off in their living room when they take a seat in their leather recliner. Jesus Christ does. His creation sings of his holiness. They compare themselves to Christ and realize he is holy and they are not. This is our call to look to the three times holy and worship him. Revelation 4:11: The worthiness of Jesus Christ Jesus is worthy to receive glory, honor and power. Don t you see that when we see Jesus Christ on his throne we will cast our crowns towards his feet and worship the one who is worthy? Jesus Christ is worthy of all glory. He will be glorified for all of eternity because he is the Creator of all things, the redeemer of all things, the beginning and the end. He deserves all glory and will receive all glory. We will honor Jesus Christ with our lives. Every knee will bow and every tongue will confess Jesus Christ is Lord because he is Lord! We will confess the truth and honor the one worthy of honor. Jesus Christ is the one worthy of all power because he alone is good. Anyone else with all power would absolutely abuse it and use it for evil. All of us think we would be the best person to have all power. JR Tolkien tells this well in his story The Lord of the Rings. In this story there is a ring with great power. But this power corrupts all that have it. It is a power that no one can wield for good. And even those that believe they could wield it for good for a short time, deep down know that they would wield it for evil. But Jesus Christ is worthy of all power because he is good all the time. Even the great disciples like Peter would have had no clue what to do with this power. If Peter had his way, Jesus would have never died and the whole world would be damned. We are not worthy of all power because we would use it for evil. We are not worthy of all power because we are ignorant of how to wield it. We are not worthy of all power because we are not God. We all want to be god and blasphemously believe deep down that we would make a better god. We may not say it this way, but our desire for the power to control our circumstances, lives and everything around us shows that we desire this power. We are not worthy of all power. Repent of your filthy desire to be god. Repent and worship the one on the throne who is worthy of all glory, honor and power. Luke 23:39-43: The criminal on the cross Each of us is one of the two criminals on the cross. We are all as guilty as the criminals on the cross. We all deserve to be there with them. The difference is, do we compare ourselves to Christ and are immediately humbled or do we scoff at Christ and see ourselves as our own god? The first criminal mocks God. He does not have in view the indescribability of the Lord Jesus Christ; he has a minimal view of Christ. He joins the world in mocking Christ and only believes what is directly in front of him. He is not taking all of creation into account. He is not taking the life of Jesus into account. He is not taking his own guilt into account. He just sees a man on the cross and mocks him. He does know the holiness of God and does not come to his Lord in reverence but only comes demanding things. He sees himself as the real god that this Jesus should appease and prove himself to. Examine your prayer life. Are you praying to a holy God in reverence or to a genie created to fulfill your very needs? Does Christ need to prove himself to you? He commands that Christ saves himself to show he is God not knowing that Christ is doing his greatest work by not saving himself. We can be so ignorant and demand God does what we think he should do. This is coming back to that desire of power. This criminal believes he is worthy of glory, honor and power and his god would exercise his power by saving himself on the cross. Do you want your power exercised or the worthy one to exercise his power and his plan? Are you this criminal? Do you fear God? The second criminal is equally guilty and deserving of the cross but he fears God. He knows the holiness of God and it has changed his heart to revere him. Do you see Jesus as a holy, other, God worthy of our reverence, or do you mock him? At this moment it would be so easy for this criminal to compare himself to the other criminal on the cross and pridefully believe he is better for not mocking God. He could tell how the other criminal deserves the cross but he does not. But this is not what he does. He sees Christ on the cross and compares his plight with his and knows that Christ does not deserve this death. His deeds had not earned him this. He sees that Christ is not worthy of this death but worthy of life and worship. He sees the depth of his sin. The he calls on Jesus Christ, the King of the great kingdom. His last words are worship of Jesus Christ and a longing to be in his kingdom. He realizes that Christ is worthy of glory, honor and power and he longs to be in his kingdom, for the Lord to remember him on that day! Look how the Lord Jesus responds to this criminal: Today you will be with me in paradise. Oh that we would hear these sweet comforting words from our Savior today, that we would be with the indescribable, holy and worthy God in his Kingdom, in paradise with him for all eternity. Stop comparing yourselves to the world and believing you are worthy, and worship Jesus Christ the one who is worthy. We are free to love much because like the criminal on the cross we have been forgiven much. Paradise awaits us for all eternity, the worship of the lamb for all eternity. The other criminal will not be there and in this place all will worship Jesus Christ on the throne and it will be beautiful! It will be paradise. Amen.
