Biblical Masculinity- 3-12-06

Slide 1- Why do we need to talk about this

            Leon Podles quote

Slide 2- Systematic Feminization of

            Scripture

            God

            Jesus

            Hymns

            Pastors

            Sermons

Slide 3- Our Triune Creator

            God the Father

            God the Son

            God the Spirit

            Equal yet different

Ontologically the same (who God is)

            Economically different (what God does)

Slide 4- God made us male and female

He created us equal in worth and image (Genesis 1:26-28)

Slide 5- God created us equal and different

            Genesis 2:7-24

            Adam was to act as:

Prophet- He was to teach Eve God’s will

Priest- He was sinless in holy communion

King- He was to co-rule the earth and subdue it for God’s glory.  He was given the cultural, social (be fruitful, multiply and marry), and spiritual (fellowship and worship) mandate.

Slide 6- The Fall

            Read Genesis 3:1-19

            Adam did not lead in:

        • Teaching and reinforcing God’s word (Prophet)
        • Holy communion/spiritual protection (Priest)
        • Physical protection (King)

Slide 7- The Curse

Eve would be afflicted with pain in her chief roles as mother and wife (v. 16).  All gender problems are due to sin and the curse.

For Adam, God curses the ground.  Only by misery and hard work will it yield food for life.  His work, his activity, and provisions for sustenance (vv. 17, 19)

Who did God call out to first in verse 9?

Slide 8- Sins of weak men

Because of sin, three kinds of men dominate the church today

                  1- Disinterested (lazy/pressured by wife)

                  2- Effeminate (soft/lacking masculinity)

                  3- Predator (selfish/seeking out women)

            Is this true, ladies?

Slide 9- Our only hope is Christ

Our only hope for men is Jesus Christ.

            He is our:

Prophet- He speaks from and for the Father and reveals to us God’s will (He represents God to man)

Priest- He is our sacrifice, and He intercedes for us to God (He represents man to God)

King- He is our rightful owner and leader.  He rules over the entire cosmos as well as our hearts

What the first Adam failed to do, Jesus succeeded. Jesus didn’t live only as an example, but in our place!

Slide 10- Redeemed Manhood- Prophet

            Prophet (knowing/applying/teaching)

Christ continues His role as a prophet by sending us the Spirit to empower us to proclaim His gospel to all tribes, tongues, and nations (Matt. 28:19-20, Acts 1:8).

Men must be sages to be prophets.  They must study and learn and call other men (mentoring them) to the same so that they may lead the mission.  Men must be wise (Prov. 4:1-9, 2 Tim. 2:15).

Slide 11- Redeemed Manhood- Priest

Priest (we are a royal priesthood- 1 Pet. 2:9)

Since Christ is our High Priest, and we are called priests to God (Rev. 1:6), men are to act as priests by sacrificing themselves if necessary, and interceding on behalf of the church or woman.

This requires great courage because it means that a man is to lay down his life if necessary for God’s glory, the protection of the church, or the well-being of the woman (Eph. 5:25)

Slide 12- Redeemed Manhood- King

King (Seated with Christ in His authority-Eph. 2:6, we are to act as lords, warriors & providers.)

As lords, men are to disciple the nations and bring them into submission to the Lord Jesus (Matt. 28:18-20).  Men are also to advance the Kingdom through the changing of culture (art, economics, politics, science, and all spheres of cultural expression).

As warriors, men are to have a desire to slay the dragon.  As Christ defeated Satan, we follow by defeating injustice and wickedness (Rev. 14).

            1 Tim. 1:18-19, Eph. 6:12, and provide- 1 Tim. 5:8

Slide 13- Sins of Weak Men- abuse, avoid, abandon

            Abuse- Prov. 14:16-17

            Avoid- Prov. 3:27

            Abandon- Prov. 2:12-15

If God’s man is to be a masculine man who teaches and preaches the word as a prophet, gives himself and intercedes like a priest, and initiates, provides, protects, and shapes this culture like a warrior king, he can only do so with the authority of Christ.

1 John 1:9- We must confess our sins of abusing, avoiding, and abandoning our manhood and seek Christ.
